What the hell did I just watch? This trailer invokes feels from the likes of Arrival, Contact, and ‘Lovecraftian’ Horror. Director Alex Garland brings us ‘Annihilation’, his follow up to the incredible ‘Ex Machina’, and we could not be more excited for this from the teaser alone. This might be one of those films you want to skip the actual trailer, as it’s bound to give a ton away plot-wise. Annihilation opens in theaters on February 23, 2018.
According to Collider:
Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s terrifying eco-horror novel of the same name, the film stars Natalie Portman and follows the expedition of four women who are sent into the mysterious “Area X”, a portion of land in the United States that has been secretly quarantined due to abnormal activity. They are the twelfth expedition sent into Area X on behalf of the mysterious Southern Reach organization. The second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third in a hail of gunfire as the members turned on one another, and the eleventh expedition returned as shells of their former selves, all dying of cancer shortly after coming back.
The film also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful 8), Tessa Thompson (Westworld), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tuva Novotny (IDK), and Oscar Isaac (Please be the same character as you were from Ex-Machina!).
