Trailer Roundup: August 18th

0

We know it’s hard to catch up on all the new trailers that get released every week. It’s difficult even knowing when a new one comes out. For example: the latest You’re the Worst season trailer came out yesterday and I had no idea until now. And it’s sort of my business to know!

So, with that in mind, we will be doing weekly trailer roundups for you. Scrounging up all the latest movie and TV trailers for you to stay up to date on. Check them out below!

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

My god, could that be? Is it? Is it…Adam Sandler in a good movie? It is. The Meyerowitz Stories comes from Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, While We’re Young, The Squid and the Whale) and stars Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson, and of course Adam Sandler. Baumbach got nominated for the Palme d’Or (best director) at Cannes and it actually won the Palm Dog, an award given to the best performance by a dog in a movie. Any movie with a strong dog performance is automatically on the must see list. Adam Sandler returning to dramatic fare, which he’s actually good with, is great to see.

The Death of Stalin

Coming from the mind of the man who created Veep, it shouldn’t be surprising that a movie humorously looking at the death of a terrible leader looks hilarious. Couple it with a knockout cast (Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Isaacs, Steve Buscemi, among others) and a, how do I put this, absurd way of portraying a historical moment and you have a potential hit on your hands. No actor trying to do a Russian accent is clearly just one bit of artistic freedom they took, and that makes it even more funny. Tambor dressed in a prominent Soviet outfit while speaking in his normal American accent is just *chef kissing fingers to mouth*.

You’re the Worst

You’re the Worst is one of the best shows on TV, despite having a rocky half season last year. And I will ride to the ends of the Earth for it. This trailer just reinforces that. Clearly, this season is upping the ante in terms of our main characters acting crazy, which is understandable after the end of last season. I am all in.

The Florida Project

This just looks heartwarming. An ode to our youth and the joy and imagination we have as children. Willem Dafoe looks great, a nice opposite to his usual mangy, creepy bad guy roles. It looks beautiful too, shot in 35mm, and offering a vibrant bunch of colors.

Literally, Right Before Aaron

Jesus, Justin Long has been off the map for yeaaaaaaaaaars. And, this isn’t exactly back on the map but it’s a step in the right direction. Literally, Right Before Aaron doesn’t look like groundbreaking stuff but it looks a step above other romantic comedy fare. The whole “my ex is getting married” thing has been done before, but it looks like there will be some laughs and at least Long’s character looks interesting. Cobie Smulders and John Cho can only help too.

Gemini

More John Cho! Nice. A little murder mystery and suspense never hurt nobody. The babe Zoe Kravitz will be gone very quickly, which is sad, but the rest looks decent. Being an official SXSW selection is always a good sign too.

Vice Principals

Season 1 of Vice Principals was some dark and weird shit. I didn’t even finish it, but more because I forgot about it than it was bad. This form of dark comedy works for me, and Walton Goggins is a legend so it might be worth it hopping back in for Season 2.

White Famous

Jay Pharoah deserves this.

The Punisher

If we get anything like the hallway sequence from Daredevil season 2 at all during this first season of The Punisher it will all be worth it.
