Talk about fan service.
If there is one character from the Star Wars prequel trilogy that has escaped criticism, it is none other than Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of the beloved, Obi-Wan Kenobi. To many fans, the upcoming Han Solo origin spin-off movie seemed like an unnecessary direction for Disney vs. exploring Obi-Wan’s story after the events of Episode III.
But all of that is about to change.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter, talks are underway with director Stephen Daldry being targeted to helm the project. Daldry’s work includes the Oscar-nominated film, Billy Elliot and The Crown on Netflix. No one else is attached and the discussions are described as “early” in the production process.
There’s still no word if Ewan McGregor would reprise his role as Obi-Wan or if Disney would prefer an origin story with a younger actor. However, one thing is clear. Fans want to see McGregor back in the Jedi robes again and the Scottish actor has expressed interest in doing so to help bridge the gap between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.
This is just one of several spin-off films Lucasfilm is rumored to be interested in making. The others include featuring Yoda, Boba Fett and possibly some time covering the Old Republic.
The Han Solo movie is set to release May 25, 2018, following this December’s debut of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.
