In an exclusive interview on SlashFilm, writer and executive producer Chris Columbus revealed that Gremlins 3 is indeed happening, and is farther along you’d think. He drops a handful of tidbits revealing that the film will go back to the ‘twisted and dark’ roots of the first movie, with less of the silly tone found in the second. The film is written and is now in development at Warner Bros.
Worried about a CGI crap fest? Worry not, says Columbus:
“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI,” Columbus said. “CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.”
As a staples of 80’s horror, the first Gremlins actually helped created the ‘PG-13’ rating due to it’s graphic murders and imagery. Here at GlitchUp, we’re holding out hope for an ‘R’ rating, minimal CGI, and a killer cast. While everyone is tired of sequels and reboots, if they treat Gremlins 3 with as much care as a Mogwai should be treated, we could get something special.
