First Teaser For “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” Has Dropped

Killing Of A Sacred Deer

Yorgos Lanthimos is a name not many know, but may know soon. Working through the beneficial and hot channel of A24 provides a nice platform for an indie filmmaker. After the huge success of The Lobster, Lanthimos and A24 have teamed back up. The Killing of a Sacred Deer could be the launchpad into the mainstream, and with a superb trailer I’m fully expecting it.

Check it out below:

The plot synopsis for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, per IMDB:

A teenager’s attempts to bring a brilliant surgeon into his dysfunctional family take an unexpected turn.

First off, that synopsis doesn’t give much and combined with the trailer I’m not entirely sure what is going on. Is the boy supposed to be a villain, is Colin Farrell? No clue.

Secondly, this is an amazing teaser. You might roll your eyes at the creepy stripped down singing of a hit pop song that every trailer uses nowadays, but it works. Combined with the unsettling score playing lightly in the background it sets the tone well. The few select lines of dialogue that come through in the trailer are perfect too, setting a feel for what kind of people these characters are and showing an early dynamic between them all.

It’s obviously going to be a messed up film. Lanthimos is known for that kind of thing. Europeans just make some odd shit. Everything he has done is sort of out there from my understanding (I’ve only seen The Lobster, none of his others) or places people in weird circumstances and hurtles them into a dark state.

The Lobster is a pitch black comedy and it’s odd in its entire running time. I wasn’t entirely sold on it after watching, but it is definitely a unique and original idea with some funny themes. It’s obvious he’s a talent and has some interesting ideas. Coupling it with a more mainstream psychological thriller feel and a strong cast could help those oddities find a popular interest.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer enters theaters on November 3rd.
