After rumors floated around several months ago regarding Jessica Chastain being cast in the upcoming X-Men movie, she has finally confirmed her appearance in the film. Chastain posted picture of her and James McAvoy, who plays Professor X in these iterations of the X-Men films, to Instagram captioning it with a subtle hint at her role.
One could take that caption as an indication she will be portraying a villain in the film, which would confirm the earlier rumors of her casting. It’s unclear what villain she will play but it has been theorized the role is that of Princess-Majestrix Lilandra Neramani.
Per Screen Rant:
“…if the early reports of her casting are to be believed, the Oscar-nominated actress will reportedly be playing Princess-Majestrix Lilandra Neramani in the film, who – for those who may not already know – is the empress of the Shi’ar alien empire in the comics. It had previously been reported that Neramani will be on a mission to imprison (and destroy) Grey as the ultra-powerful Dark Phoenix, throughout the course of the film.”
Bringing the Dark Phoenix storyline to screen is something that has excited fans of the comics to this point. Despite the major disappointment the first use of it caused in X-Men: The Last Stand, it is still one of the most beloved X-Men stories of all time. Casting a big name like Chastain only adds to the potential for a strong adaptation.
Not that a big name is a surety for quality. X-Men: Apocalypse was a let down to fans and critics despite Oscar Isaac playing the titular villain. Isaac wasn’t bad, nor is he ever, but essentially being a Purple and Muscular Violet Beauregard doesn’t help an already average movie. Hopefully the team behind Dark Phoenix finds a better way to match the actress’ talent with the presence of the character this time around.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set for release on November 2nd, 2018
